Spionage

In tegenstelling tot wat men zou denken, is er tegenwoordig meer spionage dat tijdens de koude oorlog. Het openen van landsgrenzen na de val van het ijzeren gordijn, de toegenomen wereldhandel en de groei van het internet zijn hiervoor belangrijke redenen. Daarom is het toepasselijk om het fenomeen spionage nader te bekijken door het in historische context te plaatsen. Groniek zal onder andere kijken naar de rol van spionage in het handhaven van de Nederlandse neutraliteit in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse inlichtingendienst en de betekenis van de populariteit van spy fiction.

Uitbraak!Dutch Lights
From the subtle use of light in the paintings of Vermeer and Rembrandt, to the famous landscapes of Dutch painting. ‘Dutch light’ has become a familiar and recurring theme in Dutch art. Yet, the concept can be extended to cover other ‘typically Dutch’ themes. Eindhoven, the birthplace of Philips, is generally called the ‘City of Light'; and the Dutch capital of Amsterdam is (in)famous for the neon light of its red-light district. Such themes will be explored in this edition of Groniek.

Espionage
Following the famous adage that knowledge is power, Groniek will delve into the world of espionage. Espionage entered the public consciousness during the Cold War, but through globalization and increasing interconnectivity of economies and the internet, it might be argued that more spies are on the prowl than ever before. In this issue Groniek will, among other things, explore the role of espionage in maintaining Dutch neutrality during the First World War and, of course, spy fiction.
